Apart from having a well-detailed and structured resume highlighting your skills and job experience over the years, our cover letter example allows you to convince your employer why you’re the perfect candidate for the position. While all jobs do not mandate a resume cover letter, it is advisable to write one to make your application more personal. 

An ideal cover letter shouldn’t be long and thus fit one page. Here are a few tips and tricks to note when drafting your cover letter for any posting in a job agency

Contact Information

Like a normal business letter, your name and contact information should be at the top. Also, be intentional about who you address the letter to. Go through the job posting to find the hiring manager’s name and position and include it in the letter. Where these details aren’t provided in the job posting, simply address the letter to the “Hiring Manager” or “Hiring Committee.”

Also, add “RE:” with the job title at the top of the letter as this makes it easier for the hiring manager to know which position you’re applying e.g. RE: SEO Specialist.

Have a Structured Outline

Although your cover letter is short, its structure is vital in conveying your message accurately. You can decide to make your letter 3 to 4 paragraphs but it must include the following;

  • First Paragraph – This is where you introduce yourself and express your reasons for interest in the job position with just a few sentences. Try to make your opening paragraph compelling and demonstrate keen knowledge and familiarity with the position you’re applying for. In the case of referrals, you can include the name of the person who referred the position to you or how you came to know about the job e.g. through a job agency. 
  • Second Paragraph – This is another brief paragraph where you explain how you are a perfect match for the job requirements with experience and/or education. Talk about key knowledge gained from previous experience that will enable you to succeed in the given role and accomplishments made while functioning in that position. Explain your strengths and include skills listed in the job posting to increase your value. 
  • Third Paragraph (optional) – Hiring managers love it when applicants are familiar with the company so share your knowledge about the organization and why you’re particularly interested in working with them. Talk about the company’s values and culture and how they resonate well with you. If your letter is lengthy, you might want to skip this paragraph but it makes your cover letter seem tailored for the position.
  • Concluding Paragraph – Keep this paragraph as brief as possible in 2 to 3 sentences. Thank the hiring manager for their time and reaffirm your interest in the position as you know you’re the right match. You can also request an interview to discuss the role. 

Avoid Lengthy Cover Letters

As mentioned, an ideal cover letter shouldn’t be long as it’s mainly used to support your resume and personalize the job position. It is like a normal business letter and shouldn’t exceed a page with precise and direct contents. 

Use Active and not Passive Voice

Write in an active voice to keep your cover letter from appearing wordy. This allows you to discuss other important details concerning the job position.

Edit and Proofread One Last Time

While everything might look perfect, read your cover letter one last time to avoid grammatical and punctuation errors.
